Clarendon Street, SOUTH MELBOURNE

Bendigo Bank acquired a former newsagents on heritage listed Clarendon Street in South Melbourne and included a vibrant internal fitout as demonstrated in the images attached. Council’s heritage advisors were reluctant to approve the proposal based on the fact the site is within a heritage precinct and this caused an issue for the client who was under a strict deadline to have the branch open for the public.

The team at CS realised that council were concerned about those aspects of the proposal that were visible from the public realm. The Council would be less concerned about those aspects of the development that were largely not visible from outside the branch. Our team worked diligently with the architects to develop a design response that was consistent with other business in the retail strip on the outside of the building while ensuring the vibrant and colourful experience the client wanted to ensure visitors experienced was achieved once a customer entered into the branch. The result was a development that presented a very refined heritage response on the outside of the building and a vibrant modern artistic response on the inside of the building.
